The Turks Head is the oldest surviving pub in Penzance, with origins dating back roughly 800 years to 1233.
Early Origins: It served as the first recorded taphouse on Chapel Street, which remains Penzance's most historic thoroughfare.
Smuggling and Pirates: Like many coastal Cornish watering holes of its era, the pub was frequently visited by local smugglers, sea-dogs, and pirates. An underground secret escape tunnel once used to move stolen contraband and men straight from Penzance Harbour is still visible from the courtyard.
The Holloway Connection: In the 1820's, the pub was run by the Holloway family. Their son, Thomas Holloway, spent his childhood in the building before rising to immense wealth as a 19th-century manufacturer of patent medicines, pills, and ointments, later funding Royal Holloway College.
Architecture and Preservation: While much of the visible structure reflects later 18th- and 19th-century rebuilding, the Grade-listed building has carefully preserved its rustic character. It retains original low-beamed timber ceilings, an intimate bar, and cozy seating snugs.
Retaining as many original features as possible through the years, the Turks Head retains its intimate bar, quaint and cosy snugs and traditional low beamed ceilings. With an abundance of rustic character, it’s clear to see the cherished history of centuries past.
The Turks Head has been run by Husband and Wife team Helen and Jonathan Gibbard for the last fourteen years, Jonathan an acclaimed and qualified Chef has recently retaken the reins of the kitchen which serves an extensive menu using the finest and freshest in local produce.
