Picturesque and quiet lake
Drift reservoir is approximately a mile long and covers 65 acres. It has a large dam at its southern end, and at the northern end, splits into a north-western and a north-eastern arm. It is currently operated by South West Lakes Trust.
The reservoir was first given statutory approval in 1938 but construction was deferred until after World War II and was finally completed by the West Cornwall Water Board in 1960 and has been since this date the principal source of water for the Penwith area.
Although generally hosting only small numbers of birds (230 species recorded), the reservoir has attracted a considerable number of North American vagrant shorebirds and wildfowl. Birdwatchers may use the bird hide, sited overlooking the north-western arm. Public access is only allowed around the car park/picnic area and across the dam.
Just north of Drift village on the A30, two miles south-west of Penzance.
