Cornish art-work
The St. Ives Society of Artists was founded in 1927 and is committed to the support and exhibition of representational work, bias towards the "open air" principle of its founders.
Memorable recent shows have represented the work of artists from the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, the Porthmeor Studios, the work of teachers from the St. Ives School of Painting, members of the Newlyn Society of Artists and mixed media and textile students from Cornwall College. Links have been made with Tate Gallery St. Ives, the Newlyn Art Gallery, Penlee House, the Borlase Smart Trust, Cornwall College, the St. Ives School of Painting, The St. Ives Archive Study Centre and numerous visiting colleges, whilst a programme of performances, lectures and workshops has established the Society's place in the community on another level.
The gallery overlooks the harbour that was the inspiration for so much of their work. Occasional group and one-man shows are held in the new Mariner's Gallery.
In the centre of town just behind all the shops.
