Ride on tiny steam trains
The Lappa Valley Steam Railway runs on one of the oldest track-beds in Cornwall. Opened in 1849 as a mineral line from Newquay to East Wheal Rose, in 1906 it became part of the Great Western Railway's Newquay to Chacewater branch line. This was closed in 1963, and in 1974 Eric Booth, the founder of Lappa Valley, re-opened part of the line as a narrow gauge railway.
Board our fifteen inch gauge steam train at Benny Halt and let Zebedee or Muffin take you on a two mile return journey through beautiful Cornish countryside to East Wheal Rose.
At East Wheal Rose you can paddle a canoe, play crazy golf, wander along the woodland walk, marvel at a magnificent mine engine house, solve the puzzle of the maze, play on the slides and swings, and much more. Our dramatic video film tells the tragic story of the mine and its miners and should not be missed. Why not also enjoy lunch or home-made cakes in our licensed tea-room, or browse through the gift shop for interesting presents?
Don't miss your rides on the Woodland Railway, a children's favourite, and the ten and quarter inch gauge line to Newlyn Halt. Here you have access to various walks as well as a good view of a nearby wind farm.
Our site is home to at least 150 different wild flowers, ferns and trees. We have left many wild areas along the track to encourage native flowers, birds, butterflies and animals see how many you can spot!
We are also working to preserve the historic listed mine buildings at East Wheal Rose. Recently, we have repaired the 120 foot high chimney and built a public access platform into the mine engine house. Your visit will help us in further conservation work.
