Beautiful and tranquil garden
The Homestead Woodland Garden is made up of three acres of divided gardens and three acres of woodland and wildlife habitat. In all giving an enchanted perspective of the horticultural expanse which has been a work in progress since 1990. Various sculptures are sited throughout the property. It is a garden for all seasons with planting which gives year round interest. There is plenty of seating all through the garden. The gardens are wheelchair accessible however some pathways are uneven and slippery when wet. The pond garden has an unfenced pond. Cornish variety apple orchard where chickens, ducks and geese roam free. South facing border replanted in 2001, inspired by the planting pioneered by Pied Oudolf. Archways, pots and sculptures for added effect. Mature trees and shrubs for all year round colour, shape and interest. Granite cobbled area with Hideaway.
In March 1996, with the help of the Forestry Commission, we planted over 1000 trees to form a deciduous woodland, now called Wildflower Woods, with a central area of primroses. Circular walk and seating. In 1997 approximately 1000 trees were planted to form new hedges for shelter and important habitats and food sources for wildlife. These are slow to establish due to easterly winds and the ever-increasing rabbit population! The Vegetable Garden has recently been restored. The greenhouse has been replaced and we have incorporated a new fruit cage. Other interesting areas are The Summer House, raised decking with pergola, roses, clematis and honeysuckle (at best in June) and the pool area with succulents and clematis. Hot and shady areas.
